Floods Devastate Accra, Claiming Lives

In May 2025, Accra, Ghana’s capital, faced severe flooding that claimed four lives and affected over 3,000 households.

Heavy rainfall overwhelmed drainage systems, submerging homes and displacing residents.

The Ghanaian Times reported the tragedy, highlighting the recurring issue of poor urban planning and inadequate infrastructure in the city.

Emergency services were stretched thin as rescue teams worked to evacuate families from low-lying areas.

The flooding disrupted businesses, schools, and transportation, with major roads becoming impassable.

Local authorities have faced criticism for failing to address perennial flooding despite promises of infrastructure upgrades.

Residents expressed frustration, with some blaming illegal construction on waterways for exacerbating the crisis.

The government has pledged relief funds and temporary shelters, but long-term solutions remain uncertain.

Climate experts warn that such events may intensify due to climate change, urging proactive measures like improved drainage and urban planning.

Community leaders are calling for immediate action to prevent future losses, while affected families mourn and rebuild.
