Mining in Motion Summit to Boost Ghana’s Gold Industry

Ghana’s gold mining sector, a cornerstone of its economy, is set to receive a significant boost through the Mining in Motion Summit, scheduled for June 2 – 4, 2025, at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra

Organized by the Ashanti Green Initiative, in collaboration with Ghana’s Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the World Bank, and the World Gold Council, the summit aims to bridge the gap between artisanal and small-scale miners (ASM) and large-scale miners (LSM).

This collaboration is critical for sustainable economic growth, as the ASM sector alone employs over one million Ghanaians and contributes over 40% of the country’s gold production, generating more than $5 billion in export revenue annually.

The summit will feature a dedicated panel, “Fostering Synergies Between ASM and LSM: Maximizing Gold Value Through Collaboration,” sponsored by Newmont Africa

Representatives from the Ghana National Association of Small-Scale Miners, the World Gold Council, and the ECOWAS Chamber of Mines will discuss strategies to enhance cooperation, reduce land-use conflicts, and promote shared infrastructure.

Ghana’s Minerals Commission is also playing a pivotal role by demarcating zones for ASM within large-scale mining concessions, supported by initiatives like the Community Mining Scheme and the World Bank-funded Ghana Landscape Restoration and Small-Scale Mining Project.

These efforts aim to curb illegal mining while fostering regulated, sustainable operations.

By bringing together global financial companies and local stakeholders, the summit offers a platform to explore innovative funding solutions for ASM operators, enabling them to scale operations and contribute to Ghana’s economic growth.

As the nation seeks to expand its gold industry, this event underscores the importance of collaboration in navigating environmental and regulatory challenges, positioning Ghana as a leader in sustainable mining practices.
