New Accra-Kumasi Expressway Planned

The Ghanaian government has announced an ambitious plan to construct a new expressway connecting Accra and Kumasi, aiming to reduce travel time between the nation’s two largest cities to just two and a half hours. 

This infrastructure project, revealed on May 15, 2025, is set to transform transportation, boost trade, and enhance connectivity in Ghana’s economic heartland. 

The current journey, often plagued by traffic and poor road conditions, takes significantly longer, hampering business efficiency and commuter convenience.

The expressway is part of a broader infrastructure push to modernize Ghana’s road network, with the government prioritizing high-impact projects to spur economic growth. 

Preliminary designs suggest the expressway will feature multiple lanes, modern safety measures, and rest stops to accommodate long-distance travelers. 

The project is expected to create thousands of jobs during construction and stimulate economic activity in regions along the route. 

However, funding details remain sparse, raising questions about potential partnerships with private investors or international lenders.

Public reaction has been largely positive, with commuters and businesses anticipating faster goods transport and reduced travel costs. 

Yet, some residents express concerns about potential land acquisition disputes and environmental impacts, urging transparent planning. 

The government has promised stakeholder consultations to address these issues, emphasizing sustainable development.
