Hawa Koomson Assaulted During Ablekuma North Parliamentary Rerun

Incident Overview

On July 11, 2025, former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East and former Fisheries Minister, Mavis Hawa Koomson, was reportedly assaulted at the St. Peter’s Society Methodist Church polling station in Odorkor during the parliamentary election rerun in Ablekuma North Constituency, Ghana.

The incident occurred amidst heightened tensions as a group of unidentified individuals, described as "macho men," stormed the polling station, disrupting the electoral process and attacking political figures, including Koomson, and journalists.

Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants arrived in a coordinated manner, using a pickup truck and motorbikes, causing panic among voters and electoral officials.

Video footage circulating on social media captured Koomson being pushed to the ground, kicked, and dragged by the attackers.

Despite a reinforced security presence, the intervention was insufficient to prevent the chaos.

Koomson attempted to use pepper spray to fend off the attackers but was overwhelmed.

Koomson later confirmed the assault in a statement, alleging that the attackers were affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and had forcibly taken her mobile phone.

She urged the public to treat any communications from her phone as unauthorized until she regained control.
