Liverpool vs Preston North End: Emotional Victory in Pre-Season Opener

For Preston, it’s back to the drawing board as they prepare for the Championship.

On July 13, 2025, Liverpool kicked off their pre-season with a 3-1 victory over Preston North End at Deepdale Stadium, in a match overshadowed by heartfelt tributes to the late Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva, who tragically passed away in a car accident on July 3.

The emotional weight of the occasion was palpable, with both clubs uniting to honor the brothers before kick-off.

A minute’s silence, a rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone, and a wreath laid by Preston’s captain Ben Whiteman set a solemn tone.

Liverpool, under manager Arne Slot, fielded two distinct XIs for each half, showcasing their depth and new signings.

The first half saw Giorgi Mamardashvili in goal, with Mohamed Salah captaining a side featuring young talents like Rio Ngumoha and Trey Nyoni.

Conor Bradley opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, finishing a move sparked by Ryan Gravenberch’s clever midfield turn.

Ngumoha’s dynamic runs and Federico Chiesa’s near-miss highlighted Liverpool’s attacking intent, though Preston’s Lewis Gibson made a crucial defensive intervention.

The second half brought fresh legs, including Jeremie Frimpong and Darwin Nunez.

Nunez doubled the lead early, capitalizing on a misplaced backpass to round goalkeeper Daniel Iversen and score, poignantly recreating Jota’s signature celebration.

Preston responded late through a powerful header from Liam Lindsay, but Cody Gakpo sealed the win with a composed finish in the 88th minute.
