Daddy Lumba's Funeral |
On August 30, 2025, thousands gathered at Independence Square in Accra for the one-week observation of Ghanaian highlife legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, who passed away on July 26, 2025, at age 60.
The event, initially planned for the University of Ghana Sports Stadium, was relocated due to a noise-making ban by the La Traditional Council.
Organized by the Creative Arts Agency and the Fosu family, the memorial celebrated Lumba’s four-decade career, marked by timeless hits like Aben Wo Ha and Theresa.
The ceremony drew prominent figures, including musicians Sarkodie, Diana Asamoah, and Great Ampong, who attended despite a past feud with Lumba, emphasizing forgiveness.
Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led tributes with a GHS 100,000 donation to support funeral arrangements, joined by former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia (GHS 50,000) and the Ghana Police Service ($30,000).
Other contributors included Kennedy Agyapong, Matthew Opoku Prempeh, and Alan Kyerematen.
The event featured emotional tributes, live performances of Lumba’s classics, and prayers, reflecting his profound impact on Ghana’s music and culture.
Mourners, dressed in black, filled the square, singing along to Lumba’s songs, while family members, including those of his first wife, Akosua Serwaa, were present.
The atmosphere blended grief and celebration, honoring a musician whose work shaped generations.
The Fosu family expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support and announced that details of the main funeral in Kumasi would follow.
