‘Daddy, Why Are You Running Away Into Eternity?’ – Children of Late NDC Vice Chair Pay Emotional Tribute

The funeral drew dignitaries from across the political spectrum, underscoring Sarpong's respected status.

Children of late NDC Vice Chair have expressed their grief after the sudden passing of their father

In a poignant moment that captured the grief of a nation, the children of the late Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), delivered an emotional tribute at his interdenominational state funeral.

The ceremony, held today, followed Sarpong's tragic death in a military helicopter crash on August 6 in the Ashanti Region, which claimed the lives of eight prominent figures.

Sarpong, a dedicated public servant and family man, left behind five children—four sons and one daughter—who described him not just as a father, but as their hero, role model, anchor, friend, and greatest teacher.

In their collective tribute, read amid tears and solemnity, they expressed profound shock at his sudden departure, asking the heart-rending question: “Daddy, why are you running away into eternity?”

The crash, which occurred during what was described as a routine military operation, also took the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science, Technology, and Innovation Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed, and the helicopter crew: Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, with preliminary reports suggesting mechanical failure, though no official conclusions have been released.

Sarpong's children highlighted his purposeful life, marked by dignity, dedication, and an unwavering commitment to his family, community, and Ghana.

“You lived a life of purpose, dignity, and dedication to your family, your community, and your beloved Ghana,” they said.

They recalled his tireless work ethic, passion for service, and the love he showed to everyone around him.

At home, he was a gentle, wise, and warm presence who set high standards for his family while providing unwavering support.

“Though your unbelievable departure has left a void no one can ever fill, your legacy lives on in us,” the tribute continued. The children promised to carry forward his name, dreams, and lessons, vowing to honor his memory through their own lives. They concluded with a farewell in both English and local dialects: “Rest well, Daddy. Rest in peace. Daddy, nanti yie. Damirefa Due.”

Samuel Sarpong's passing has been mourned widely within the NDC and across Ghana's political landscape. As Vice Chairman, he played a key role in party mobilization and policy advocacy, particularly in the Ashanti Region, a stronghold for the opposition.

Tributes from party leaders, including NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, praised his integrity, humility, and strength—qualities echoed by his children.

It served as a reminder of the fragility of life and the sacrifices made by public servants. As Ghana prepares for upcoming elections, Sarpong's legacy is expected to inspire continued dedication to national development.

In their words, the children's tribute encapsulates the personal loss behind the public figure: a father whose absence leaves an irreplaceable gap, yet whose influence endures eternally.
