Popular TikToker Jailed Seven Months for Threatening President Mahama and Government Leaders

In a swift crackdown on online threats, a popular Ghanaian TikToker known as Kwame Nkrumah II has been sentenced to seven months in prison for issuing death threats against President John Dramani Mahama and other high-ranking officials.

David Kwodow Prah Afful, 30, who amassed followers on TikTok with his provocative videos, went viral last week after a livestream where he vowed to "end" the lives of the president, Members of Parliament, and government executives.

In the footage, Afful, brandishing what appeared to be a weapon, also called for widespread violence, urging supporters to burn marketplaces and incite chaos across the country.

The clip, shared widely on social media, sparked outrage and prompted a rapid police response.

Afful was apprehended on Saturday, September 13, at a hideout near Kasoa Market around 2:20 p.m. local time.

Appearing before the Accra Circuit Court on Monday, he pleaded guilty to charges of threat of death and offensive conduct conducive to a breach of the peace.

During proceedings, the self-proclaimed "Kwame Nkrumah II" – a nod to Ghana's founding father – tearfully sought forgiveness from the officials he targeted, claiming his words were born of frustration over national issues.

Presiding judge, Justice [Name Withheld], described the threats as "reckless and destabilizing," emphasizing the court's commitment to safeguarding public order in an era of digital amplification.

"Social media is a powerful tool, but it cannot be a shield for anarchy," the judge remarked.

The sentencing has ignited debates on free speech versus national security in Ghana, where President Mahama's administration faces mounting economic pressures.

Rights groups have called for balanced enforcement, while authorities warn of stricter monitoring of online content.

Afful's case serves as a stark reminder: in the age of viral fame, words can lead to real consequences.

As he begins his term at Nsawam Medium Security Prison, his TikTok account remains suspended, silencing a voice that once commanded thousands.
